This is our favorite organic mattress. WIRED senior reviewer Scott Gilbertson says it’s the only mattress that both he (a firm mattress lover) and his wife (a soft mattress fan) agree on because it combines the best of both worlds without leaning too far to one side. It’s great for odd sleepers and couples, and it’s also extremely durable. Gilbertson has been sleeping on it for almost two years. Avocado frequently has 10% off sales, but it’s still $100 cheaper than usual.
The medium-firm feel and structured support of the Birch Luxe make it a great choice for most sleep styles, but especially for side sleepers. The Luxe uses multiple layers of wool and individually wrapped coils that are perfectly positioned to provide lumbar support and cradle your spine while maintaining satisfying firmness on all four sides. The pillow top and extra layer of cashmere blend also provide excellent temperature regulation.
The Awara Hybrid Mattress is our favorite affordable organic mattress, especially since it’s on sale right now. The Awara is supportive and springy, but the springs are easier to feel than in other mattresses, and the edges are quite firm. There isn’t much motion transfer, and the soft mattress fabric never got too hot or too cold during testing. It’s a great value option, both on and off sale.
Turmely’s organic latex mattress aims to solve a problem that plagues latex mattresses: latex mattresses are often heavy and expensive, and can be hard to find in online shops. But Turmely packages and mails all of its foam layers separately, making it easier to ship and move, and then zips the whole thing up with an organic cotton cover. WIRED editor Martin Sizmer tried the medium-firm mattress and was pleased that Turmely’s system worked well and felt like a traditional latex mattress.

Supportive and cooling, Nicole found that the mattress helped her fall asleep faster and sleep better than expected. The mattress’ quilted top layer feels ultra-luxurious and is cool to the touch, while breathable phase-change fibers draw heat away from your body. Our favorite mattress for side sleepers is firmer than most other mattresses for side sleepers, but trust us, there’s a reason we recommend it. The 14-inch hybrid mattress has five layers, with a quilted pillow-top top layer that feels more luxurious than you’d expect at this price point (especially considering it’s on sale). Our reviewers found that the Bear Elite is flexible enough to support their hips and elbows while sleeping on their side, and it’s also very breathable. Medium-firm mattresses are great for back support, but they’re hard to find for side sleepers. The Bear Elite supports you in your favorite position.
Side sleepers often prefer a soft mattress, but a soft mattress isn’t always as supportive as it needs to be. The Nectar Premier solves that problem with soft, plush foam and a layer of coils for support. The 13-inch mattress is soft enough to sink into and conforms to your body, but still provides plenty of support for pressure points. Its softness makes it perfect for full side sleepers, not mixed sleepers. Plus, it’s on sale at a great price.
The Serta Perfect Sleeper is delivered by scheduled delivery and large truck just like a traditional mattress. There’s no need for a boxed mattress or inflatable mattress. There are a few customization options, but the firmness of the Ultimate Support and the plush pillow top are a great combination of softness and support. With coils designed for both side and back sleepers, it’s a great choice for both side and back sleepers.
Best deals on back pain mattresses
The Saatva Classic has a unique spring construction that we love, especially for relieving lower back pain. It has a layer of pocket coils made of 14.5 gauge steel and a base layer made of heavier 13 gauge steel coils. Thanks to these coils, it also has good bounce. In the “Luxury” firmness level, the organic cotton pillow top is zoned and quilted to promote lumbar support. In addition, there is a high-density foam layer that also provides lumbar and edge support. Saatva mattresses don’t come in a box, they are delivered by truck and you can have the delivery guy place it wherever you want in your home. We often see them sold at this price point, but this is a great price to get.
Plank Firm Natural is another great mattress for back pain. It’s an organic version of our favorite firm mattress, Plank ($999), and it’s double-sided, with a medium-firm and firm side. With two layers of latex on each side and individually wrapped coils in the middle, this bouncy Plank mattress has transformed my back pain problems. The medium-firm side was comfortable and supported my scoliosis- and spondylitis-injured spine while sleeping on my side. To my surprise, I ended up liking the firm side even more, as I started to combine side and back sleeping, alleviating some of the problems I was causing my body overnight. I hadn’t woken up pain-free in years, until I tried Plank Natural. Its firm, bouncy nature also helps me get out of bed quicker.
The Plank Natural mentioned above helps eliminate pain by encouraging you to change your sleeping position, while the Saatva Rx allows you to sleep on your right side, which is your preferred position, all night while eliminating muscle pain. My sister also tried this after hurting her back from tossing and turning, and she definitely woke up feeling better. It was a little too soft for my spinal injury (I have spondylosis), but if you regularly have muscle pain that usually gets worse overnight, this mattress is perfect.
