Apple’s second-generation AirPods were released in 2019, and even though they’re five years old, Apple still sells them for $129, making them the most affordable AirPods ever. This classic AirPods design has been replaced by the third generation, but if you’re looking for AirPods, these AirPods are a more affordable entry-level model. With five hours of battery life, an additional 24 hours in the included charging case, Hey Siri support, double-tap gestures, and more, the second-generation AirPods are still a great deal.
Here are four underused tips and tricks for Apple’s most affordable AirPods.
1 Rename your AirPods
Customize the name of your AirPods
Renaming your device can help you easily identify it and personalize it. Most people keep the default names for their AirPods, but it’s easy to change them.
To change the name of your AirPods: Open Settings, select your AirPods, tap Name and enter the name you want for your AirPods.

2 Double tap
Control your audio with just a tap
Did you know that AirPods have a hidden button to activate Siri or control audio? Now you know: You can double-tap the stem of second-generation AirPods to invoke a preset action. Each pod can be set to invoke one of five actions: Siri, play/pause, next track, previous track, or off.
To set up the double-tap gesture: Open Settings > Select your AirPods > Select Left or Right > Select the action you want to pair with this pod.

3 Hey Siri
Let Siri do the heavy lifting for you
Save energy the next time you pull out your phone and ask Siri. As long as “Hey Siri” is enabled on your iPhone, your AirPods can recognize your voice command and relay the requested action to your iPhone. For example, I frequently use “Hey Siri” to create reminders or skip to a specific time in a podcast without using my hands.
To enable Hey Siri: Open Settings, tap Siri & Search, then tap Listen > Siri or Hey Siri.

4 Audio Sharing
Share music with other AirPods users
Have you ever been listening to some great music and wanted to share it with the person next to you? Instead of giving away one of your AirPods or taking out your AirPods and annoying everyone around you with your speakers, try Audio Sharing. This little-talked-about feature lets you share audio between two pairs of AirPods.
To share audio with others, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone to go to Control Center, tap the blue AirPods icon in the top-right corner and choose “Share Audio…,” then place your AirPods or connected iPhone nearby and tap “Share Audio” when prompted.
