Key Takeaways
- Samsung no longer pre-installs Samsung Messages on its flagship phones.
- The app has some features worth trying out, including message categories, starring, and custom quick responses.
- Outside the US, the app will remain pre-installed.
One of the downsides to buying a non-Google Android phone is that you usually have to deal with a lot of duplicate apps. Samsung is no problem here. Open up your new Galaxy S24 Ultra and you’ll see two browsers, two email apps, two calendar apps, and more. For the most part, you can ignore these, but what if one of these apps is actually… good? Despite being an unnecessary replacement for Google Messages, Samsung Messages does a few things the standard Android app can’t.
As Samsung and Google have worked more closely together, the app has been pushed aside. It started when Samsung made Google Messages the default text messaging app on the Galaxy S21 and all subsequent Galaxy smartphones. Google Messages may have become the default, but Samsung devices have historically shipped with Samsung Messages pre-installed. But with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, Samsung is removing Samsung Messages from its smartphones entirely.
Just because Samsung Messages isn’t part of Samsung’s future vision for OneUI doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from the app’s features for now, as it will likely remain pre-installed, especially outside the U.S. Here are some of the features that make Samsung Messages just as useful as Google Messages:

Tired of your Samsung phone cluttered with unused preloaded apps? Here’s a step-by-step guide to easily remove them.
1 Samsung Messages lets you organize your chats into categories
Like a folder system for important messages
Some of you may have a group chat for all your messaging needs, while others may message lots of people individually for work or personal preference. For those of you, Samsung has a handy way to keep track of individual messages so you can quickly find them later.
For example, if you have a bunch of messages about a work project and you want to organize them, you can create a category just for that project. That way, if you need to contact someone or find information from a message, you can find it easily.
Starting a new category is relatively easy.
- open Samsung Messages App.
- Tap on the three dot menu Top right More options.
- Tap setting.
- Tap Conversation Categories Make sure it’s enabled.
- Tap the Conversations category, Tap “Add category”.
- Name the categoryTap , tap Add, and then use the search bar on the next page to add a message.
- From the Samsung Messages main screen, Tap a category to switch between themview messages and add new chats.

7 Features RCS Should Steal from Apple iMessage
RCS is coming to iPhone, but it will be missing some of iMessage’s best features.
2 Starring allows you to save a specific text in Samsung Messages
When you need a more granular classification than categories
If the categories aren’t specific enough, Samsung Messages also lets you star individual messages to save them for later. I find this works best when you care more about the content of the message than the context of the entire chat.
If a friend said something particularly interesting, star it. If a loved one said something that cheered you up on a tough day, star it. If you received instructions but know you’re going to forget them, be sure to star them. Unlike categories, all messages will appear in the same Starred Messages section in Samsung Messages, which is a convenient way to save the things that are important.
To star a message:
- In the chat, Tap and hold the chat bubble.
- Tap Star Message Save your message.
- From the main messages screen, tap the three-dot menu, Tap on a starred message.
- From this menu, you can view all messages that you have starred.

It’s much easier to access Gemini through Google Messages than through a separate app, but what it actually does might not be useful to all users.
3 Samsung Messages lets you add your own quick responses to save time
If you can’t type a reply, send a pre-written custom reply
Nearly every good messaging app includes some way of sending quick pre-written replies, either written by the phone manufacturer or automatically generated by AI. These exist in Samsung Messages as Quick Responses, but you can also add your own custom replies.
While using a quick response is inherently less personal, if you receive a message but don’t have time to reply, you might want a way to let them know you’ll follow up soon. Custom quick responses are a bit more personal than the old canned messages and emoji reactions.
To add your own quick response:
- open Samsung Messages App.
- Tap the three dots More options menu,[設定]in the top-right corner.
- Tap Other settings.
- Then tap quick response.
- Tap the “+” button Add a quick response.

What is RCS? Learn about the standard integrated chat
Google Messages supports RCS messaging, and Apple plans to add it to iPhones with iOS 18 in 2024. But what is RCS messaging?
Four Samsung Messages lets you visually customize your chats
Colorful background with high contrast bubbles
Samsung Messages’ customization options aren’t as in-depth as Google Messages (you can’t change the color of the chat bubbles, for example), but it’s still a fun way to make your daily group chats feel fresh.
If you have a lot of messages to sort through, this is another way to visually see who you’re talking to at a glance. You can change the background to a pre-selected color or photo, and adjust the opacity and contrast of the chat bubbles to make them stand out more.
To start customizing:
- open Samsung Messages App.
- Tap Messages What you want to customize.
- Tap on the three dot menu It’s in the top right corner.
- Then tap Customize your chat room.
- Select the desired color or pick a photo from your gallery and adjust the opacity and contrast of the bubbles to your liking.

Five Samsung Messages lets you schedule messages to be sent later
Ensure your texts always arrive at the right time
Call it social anxiety or a desire for total control, but being able to schedule messages is very important to me. The ability to schedule messages is becoming more and more common, but Samsung Messages was an early adopter of the feature. Apple just added the feature to iMessage in iOS 18.
Scheduling text messages is useful if you need to send a reminder but don’t want to forget about it, or if your family members are in different time zones and you want to make sure their birthday messages get there on time.
To schedule a message:
- open Samsung Messages App.
- Tap Current Chat.
- Tap on the “+” icon At the bottom of the screen Schedule Message.
- Choose a date and time (Must be at least 6 minutes past the current time).
- after that Please enter your message Press Send.
- Or, from the main message screen, Tap on the new chat bubble To start a new chat, click in the bottom right.
- Tap the field at the top Add recipients.
- Tap “+” Tap Schedule message.
- choose Date and Time.
- Please enter your message Press Send.
