Key Takeaways
- Season 3 of Interview with the Vampire is based on the second book of The Vampire Chronicles, “Lestat the Vampire.”
- The new trailer features some Easter eggs that hint at future storylines
- Season 3 is set to debut next year
Season 3 of Interview with the Vampire was only announced a few weeks ago, but AMC has already prepared a trailer for it at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, giving eager fans their first look at the film adaptation of Anne Rice’s second Vampire Chronicles novel, Lestat. The trailer has a completely different feel to the show’s first two seasons, showing protagonist Lestat preparing for an interview with Daniel Molloy, seemingly as a response to the publication of Lewis’ book at the end of season one.
But aside from getting our first look at the character’s ornate new design (and our first hear of rock star Lestat’s song!), there are some deeper references to past seasons of the show and the Vampire Chronicles novels that you may have missed in the trailer: Watch the four-minute clip below and see if you spot the same references as us.
Interview with the Vampire
- cast
- Sam Reed, Jacob Anderson, Asad Zaman, Eric Bogosian
Be warned: this post contains major spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 of Interview with the Vampire, as well as minor spoilers for The Vampire Chronicles book series.
Daniel Molloy is back, but not fully physically.
This is a major departure from the original story, but it sets the stage for a subplot that has long been hinted at.
AMC
The first thing viewers hear in the trailer is the voice of actor Eric Bogosian, confirming that Daniel Molloy will indeed be joining the series in Season 3. Though Daniel doesn’t appear in the original Lestat the Vampire books, he has become a fan-favorite character and since his vampirization has been moved much earlier in the timeline in the TV series, it makes sense to include Daniel here, especially since the creators have hinted that they plan to move the Devil’s Minion storylines (including Daniel’s relationship with Armand) from the original books to earlier in the TV series.

Iconic intro
Readers of the book will immediately recognize Lestat’s opening monologue.
A key difference in the structure of Interview with the Vampire and its sequel, Lestat, is that the first film is told in interview format, while the second is told in first person, and, as the trailer suggests, Lestat appears to be leading the interview with Daniel, speaking directly to the audience telepathically and reciting the book’s iconic introduction almost word for word while Daniel appears to choke up behind him.

“Arman told the truth.”
Mysterious tattoo or message?
AMC
The trailer features a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment where an unnamed crew member shows the camera what appears to be a tattoo or handwritten message that reads, “Armando told the truth.” Though there’s no basis for this in the original work, this seems to hint that viewers may see Season 3 explore the events of Seasons 1 and 2 from a different perspective, potentially portraying Armando’s character in a different light.

Scars from the past reappear
Lestat’s necklace in the opening scene is a direct reference to the events of the season 1 finale.
AMC
Speaking of flashbacks to past events, if the reddish necklace seen in the trailer is any clue, it looks like we’ll be looking back at Lestat’s “death” in season 1. It appears to resemble the scar left on his neck when Louis tried to kill him (though he didn’t). This seems like an obviously intentional costume choice, and since the events of Interview with the Vampire are covered in the book Lestat the Vampire, this seems like a pretty clear signal that fans should expect a return to New Orleans in the next season.

Lestat’s rock star persona revealed
Musical references include David Bowie, Queen and Chapel Rowan.
One of the highlights of the new trailer is the nearly full-length song “Long Face,” sung by Sam Reid as Lestat. If the song sounds familiar, that’s entirely intentional, as showrunner Lorin Jones said at the SDCC Immortal Universe panel that to find Lestat’s sound, they chose songs from many famous artists, including David Bowie, Bjork, Freddie Mercury, Fiona Apple, David Lee Roth, and more contemporary artists like Chapelle Roan and Florence Welch.
Though there is no specific release date yet, Interview with the Vampire season 3 is currently scheduled to premiere next fall on AMC and AMC+.
