Key Takeaways
- AirPods Max are premium headphones made from aluminum.
- Apple’s AirPods Max are available from Apple for $549.
- AirPods Max are the only over-ear headphones that Apple sells under the AirPods brand.
The AirPods Max, Apple’s only over-ear headphones under the AirPods brand, were launched in December 2020 after years of rumors. Almost four years after its release, the headphones still pack great features and great sound quality.
Available in five colors and made from aluminum, the AirPods Max look and feel premium. Don’t worry, they’re priced at $549. I’ve been patiently waiting for Apple to release the second generation of the AirPods Max, but when I saw a great deal on Amazon for 32% off an unboxed pair of AirPods Max, I ordered one. To my surprise, they were brand new and also had the option to add AppleCare+.
While using my new headphones, I discovered six underused tips and tricks for the AirPods Max.
1 Customizing the Noise Control Buttons
Easily switch between noise control modes
AirPods Max has three noise control modes: Noise Cancellation, Transparent, and Off. It’s up to you which mode you prefer. Many people, like me, prefer to switch between two or more modes. By default, you can switch between Noise Cancellation and Transparent by pressing the Noise Control button, the long button on top of the right ear cup.
To customize which noise control options you toggle with the side button, tap setting > Tap AirPods Max > Scroll down The button will toggle as follows: > Tap to select or deselect a selection.

2 Call Controls
Answer, end, and mute calls
When you’re wearing AirPods Max, don’t pull out your iPhone to answer, hang up, or mute a call. Stop it now. Making calls is one of the most effective ways to use your AirPods. To answer a call, press the Digital Crown once, and to end a call, tap twice. When you’re on a call, press the Digital Crown once to mute or unmute. It’s like magic. The Digital Crown is the circular, scrollable button on the right ear cup.
To customize your call control gestures, setting > Tap AirPods Max > Scroll down Call Controls> Tap Mute and unmute or End call > Select Press once or Press twiceOther gestures will automatically revert to the opposite setting.

Did you know that the Digital Crown on your AirPods Max has a few secret gestures for controlling audio? If you frequently take out your iPhone to pause, play, skip, or adjust the volume, this tip might come in handy.
With the Digital Crown on your AirPods Max, you can:

- Press twice to fast forward
- Press three times in succession to rewind
- Press and hold to activate Siri
- Rotating the Digital Crown forward increases the volume
- Turn the digital crown backwards to decrease the volume
To switch the volume control scroll direction, setting > Tap AirPods Max > Scroll down Digital Crown > Select From to Back.

4 Personalized Spatial Audio
Customize your listening experience
Spatial audio is an audio technology that creates a three-dimensional audio environment that makes sounds seem as if they are coming from different directions, not just left and right, but above and below. With your iPhone or iPad with Face ID, spatial audio can be customized to match your head movements, making it feel even more realistic.
To set up personalized spatial audio, setting Tap your AirPods Max on your Face ID device and scroll down Spatial Audio > Tap Personalized Spatial Audio > Customize your spatial audio… > Continued > Start capturing > Move your head left and right as instructed > Tap end.

5 Restart your AirPods Max
Troubleshooting 101
If you’re having trouble with your device, a tried-and-true troubleshooting suggestion is to restart your device. AirPods Max can be restarted, but other AirPods models can’t. Apple recommends restarting your AirPods if you’re having problems.
To restart your AirPods Max, press and hold the Noise-Control button and Digital Crown simultaneously for 15 seconds. The LED status light on the button on the right ear cup flashes amber. When the light turns white, release the button. Your AirPods Max have restarted.

6 Find a network
Never lose your AirPods again
I don’t know about you, but Find My is one of my favorite services Apple offers to help me retrieve forgotten or misplaced items. As an owner of expensive headphones, I recommend making sure that the Find My network is enabled on your AirPods Max. With the Find My network turned on, your AirPods Max will appear in the Find My app and on a map at iCloud.com/find, showing their last known location. The Find My app also alerts you if you leave your AirPods Max in a location. The Find My app can play a sound when your headphones are nearby or guide you to their location on your iPhone.
To enable network discovery: setting > Tap AirPods Max > Scroll down to “Search for Networks” > Find a network It will switch to green.
