On Friday, a post containing what appeared to be personal information about Israeli Olympic athletes was published online.
As The Israel Times The report said information including players’ names, phone numbers, addresses, passwords, family relationships, photos, military status and blood test results were published on Telegram.
The hackers also created a website and Twitter account, both of which have now been deleted, in an attempt to spread the information more widely.
The data leak was attributed to a group of hackers calling themselves “Zeus” and appears to have been part of an online campaign designed to intimidate Israeli participants in the Olympic Games currently taking place in Paris.
According to a Zeus post, at least some of the leaked information was gleaned from a hack of the Israeli National Sports Center, which is likely the source of the athletes’ travel documents.
Some Israeli athletes have reportedly received death threats via email.
France’s cybercrime agency, OFAC, is tasked with investigating security breaches and removing sensitive information from the internet.
News of the data breach comes as Israeli officials continue to express concern about potential security threats during the Olympics, after claiming last week that Iran was trying to target its citizens and athletes taking part in the Paris Games.
