It looks like Spotify will be getting some AI processing from Google Gemini. Android Authority discovered Spotify Extension Google Gemini A recent APK teardown of the Google app (version 15.30.27.29) revealed that this means that you’ll soon be able to control your music streaming app via Google’s AI platform. YouTube Music has a similar feature.
The extension will allow Gemini to play both music and podcasts. It will also have access to your Spotify playlists and history. This means that in the near future, an AI might start a conversation about your music preferences or ask you why you’ve been listening to “Duel of the Fates” from “Star Wars: Episode IV: The Phantom Menace” all morning. I’m pretty nervous about what parts of your conversations and related information I’ll be giving Gemini access to in order to play the latest catchy tune.
Android Authority managed to get the extension working, and while it’s clearly not in full swing yet, it’s interesting nonetheless: When you try to play a song, the author points out that although a YouTube Music card appears initially, the song you select will play on Spotify.
Using the chatbot, you can type “@spotify” and the title of the song you want to hear, and it will play music in the background without launching the app. I’m curious to see if the extension can search for songs with lyric search or even hum along to “guess the song,” a feature well known from apps like Shazam.
The extension appears to be nearly complete, but it’s unclear whether this will be a free service or if there will be a fee built into a Spotify or Gemini subscription.
