Book now: The new Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) is available to preorder on Amazon, Best Buy, and the Google Store for $279.99, with shipments starting August 20th.
Google is revamping its smartest thermostat for the first time since the Obama administration.
The tech giant on Tuesday (one week before its big Made by Google event) unveiled the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, a long-awaited successor to the 2015 model that’s been redesigned and upgraded with new features. It also includes a new second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor, which can monitor individual rooms, explaining the $30 price increase.
The new Nest Learning Thermostat retails for $279.99 and is available for pre-order now on Amazon, Best Buy and the Google Store ahead of its official release on Tuesday, August 20. (Available in three metallic finishes: Polished Obsidian, Polished Gold and Polished Silver.) Additional sensors can be purchased separately for $39.99 each or $99.99 in a three-pack.

What to expect from Made by Google 2024
The device’s improvements include a 60 percent larger footprint and a new bezel-free curved crystal LCD display that, according to the company’s blog post, is inspired by “the shape and movement of water” (think of a droplet of water floating on the surface of a coin). It’s slimmer than the previous model, and the dial requires a lighter touch to turn. And a new Dynamic Farsight feature lets users customize their home screen to show the time, temperature, weather, humidity, and outdoor air quality. Google calls it “our smartest, most beautiful thermostat ever.”

Speaking of smart features, the Nest Learning Thermostat’s purpose is to keep you comfortable while saving energy, and now it’s even better. First, a new AI-powered “Smart Schedule” feature helps it learn your daily routine and temperature settings faster. Changes to this schedule can be enabled automatically or you can manually approve them. It can also fine-tune your home’s temperature based on the weather outside.
Relatedly, if you have a ventilation system, a new “smart ventilation” feature will pump in fresh air when outdoor air quality is good, and pause ventilation when conditions worsen (such as during a heat wave or wildfire season).
Google says the new Nest Learning Thermostat is compatible with most HVAC systems and can even monitor their performance — for example, it’ll alert you if the heater doesn’t work even after you turn up the temperature, all through the Google Home app.
