of Borderlands The video game series is an undeniable hit, especially with 2012’s critically acclaimed Borderlands 2, which became publisher 2K Games’ best-selling game of all time upon its release. With such a widespread fanbase, it’s no surprise that efforts have been made to adapt the franchise into a film. However, despite an all-star cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, the first few trailers have been uninspiring, leaving fans of the series concerned about the film’s tone and direction. With just one day until the film’s release, some critics have been able to get an early look at the film, but unfortunately Borderlands has been met with a slew of complaints. Video Game Movies Adaptation may be on track to set a new record low.

Borderlands debuts with 0% on Rotten Tomatoes
Critics call it “disappointing” and “boring.”
While the film has not been screened by most critics, those who have had the chance to watch it seem less than impressed, with the film currently sitting at a truly dismal 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. AwardsWatch critic Alistair Ryder wrote, “Borderlands is the worst kind of flop; it lacks any of the quirky quirks to give it a second life as a cult classic, and its lack of originality makes it feel excruciatingly long at just 102 minutes.” Additionally, Collider’s Taylor Gates noted that the film feels rushed with a “shaky” script and visual effects, while Looper’s Cynthia Vinnie said the film is “more boring than exciting, more tedious than engaging.”

The video game film genre has always been uneven, but there have been some hits in recent years, most notably Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. The Movie, which managed to gross over $1 billion at the box office despite still having a poor 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But there have been plenty of duds before, including 2016’s forgettable Assassin’s Creed film adaptation, 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which inexplicably starred Jake Gyllenhaal, and even 2005’s early rock film Doom. None of these films have new Rotten Tomatoes scores, but it’s worth noting that none of them have 0%.
