What will happen at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 4?
Who dies and does the universe still exist?
Netflix
First, the good news: even though the show has ended, the universe will continue to exist. At least one of them. Some of the show’s most popular characters are still alive after the show has ended, too. But sadly, that doesn’t include the Hargreeves siblings. That’s right, no members of the titular Umbrella Academy are still alive.
In season 4, they lose their powers in the alternate timeline after Marigold (the particle that gives them their powers) is removed. Throughout season 4, we learn more about Marigold’s origins. In episode 4, it is revealed that the particle was created by Reginald’s wife Abigail, who is of course an alien, just like Reginald. But what Abigail didn’t know at the time, Marigold’s creation also led to the creation of another particle, called Durango, of course. Durango and Marigold are like matter and antimatter, and coming together would be the end of the world.

And now, unlike Calvin and Hobbes’ noodle case, the truth behind the infamous Jennifer murder of Ben Hargreeves is finally revealed. After having their memories wiped, the brothers learn that Ben unwittingly discovered a girl filled with Durango just as the Hargreeves brothers were filled with marigolds. You guessed it, her name is Jennifer. To stop Ben and Jennifer from combining the marigolds and Durango to destroy the world, Reginald kills them both. Yes, Reginald was the cause of Ben’s death.
First, the good news: the universe will still exist after the show ends.
The Five discover a mysterious subway system that connects all the different timelines in existence – and there are many of them. In each timeline, the brothers find themselves repeatedly trying to save the world or have it destroyed. The Five finally realize that the only way to end the cycle is for every Marigold in existence to combine with every Durango in existence, which will result in a purification – the destruction of everything except the original timeline.
The Hargreeves and Lyla (who all drink Marigold’s shots and are now more powerful than before) must sacrifice themselves along with Jennifer to make Marigold and Durango all disappear, thus restoring the original timeline to the point before the Hargreeves siblings mysteriously appeared as the children of their suddenly pregnant mother.
In the final pre-credits scene, we find ourselves in a sunlit field at 12 o’clock on August 8, 2024 (the day the show’s final season originally aired). This mimics 12 o’clock on October 1, 1989, the day in the show’s first episode when 43 women gave birth around the world, even though none of them were pregnant at the time the day began. But as the voiceover says, nothing unusual happened this time at all. The Hargreeves never existed, and balance in the Force was restored. Or something.
Who will be alive at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 4?
Finally, a familiar face appears
Netflix
While all of the Hargreeves siblings, as well as Lyla and Jennifer, are wiped out by Marigold and Durango when they collide with each other, that doesn’t mean other characters can’t survive – we find many of our protagonists and antagonists enjoying the lives they would have otherwise led, since the Hargreeves siblings and The Umbrella Academy never existed.
Familiar faces include Alison’s daughter Claire and Lyla’s children, who are somehow still alive despite their parents never having existed, and the Hargreeves siblings’ robot adoptive mother Grace, who is also still alive, presumably in human form.
A lot of the bad guys survive, but in the only real timeline, maybe they’re not so bad anymore. Handler appears happy with Hazel, the professional assassin who appeared in the show’s first season. Movingly, Handler walks alongside Agnes, the waitress with whom he falls in love.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 post-credits scene explained
A touching final scene, but one that doesn’t hint at what happens next
Netflix
The end credits include behind-the-scenes photos from the making of the show, but are followed by a short post-credits scene showing eight marigolds at the base of a tree suddenly and magically blooming, emitting a golden dust that closely resembles marigolds.
These clearly represent the seven Hargreaves brothers and sisters, with the eighth possibly representing Lila, although as Durango is a type of marigold, one of the flowers may represent Jennifer.
The scattered dust leaves one questioning whether all the marigolds were really destroyed, but the ending wraps up nicely, so perhaps it’s just a gimmick to titillate people who didn’t realize the flowers were, in fact, marigolds.
Will The Umbrella Academy season 4 stick to the comics?
There is no more material left
Netflix
The Umbrella Academy comics have three main limited series written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá: Seasons 1 and 2 of the Netflix show are based on the first two volumes of the comics. Apocalypse Suiteand DallasThe third season of the show will combine ideas from the third volume, Hotel Oblivionand a fourth installment in the series is yet to be announced. Sparrow Academy.
This means that the majority of ideas from the comics have been featured in the first three seasons of the Netflix show, and naturally, season four will introduce new storylines that weren’t in the comics.
But that doesn’t mean everything that happens in The Umbrella Academy season 4 is entirely new. There are some callbacks to events from the comics, such as a newspaper article about the Umbrella Academy saving the Eiffel Tower, a reference to the beginning of the first comic, which was too complicated to film for the Netflix series.
One of the storylines in The Umbrella Academy season 4 is The Umbrella Academy: Hotel OblivionIn season four, Klaus is forced to work as a psychic medium to pay off his debts, and a woman enlists his services (in every sense of the word) to find where her late husband has hidden his cash. This is largely the same as in the comics, but this storyline is subsequently expanded on in the TV show beyond what happened in the comics.
Will there be more seasons of The Umbrella Academy?
No further seasons planned
Netflix
For fans of The Umbrella Academy, the end of season 4 is bittersweet. Steve Blackman, creator of the TV series, confirmed that season 4 will be the last. It’s not a surprise at all, as the story wrapped up nicely in season 4 and there was no more room for the comics to adapt. Even though season 4 goes beyond the comics and includes some short stories from The Umbrella Academy, Blackman clearly feels the story is over.
It’s not all bad news, however. Fans still have more Umbrella Academy goodness to look forward to, as the fourth volume of the comic book series on which much of The Umbrella Academy season 3 is based has yet to be published. However, there is currently no set release date, so you may have to wait a while. The Umbrella Academy: Sparrow Academy.
