It’s available for pre-order now, priced at $1,799 plus a $300 store credit, and will officially go on sale on September 4. Anyone who buys it will get one year of the Google One AI premium plan for free.
New Apps, Services and AI Features
Pixel phones are known for being packed with smart features, and the latest devices bring with them several new features and apps. A dedicated Pixel Weather app has arrived, summarizing the weather using the device’s onboard Gemini Nano large language model. Another new app is Pixel Screenshots, a dedicated place to store screenshots. Gemini Nano can understand the content of an image, so it can request information without having to hunt for the right screen capture. There’s also Pixel Studio, which lets you create new images using generative AI, and you can also create and insert stickers from your photos.
When it comes to calls, there’s “Call Notes,” which lets you write call details on a sticky note. These details can include phone numbers mentioned during the call, repair estimates, reminders to call someone back, and more. Anything noteworthy is recorded and left in your notes, so you don’t have to hunt for a pen and paper. Google says that due to call recording laws, the other person will be notified when this feature is activated.
Pixel phones are finally getting satellite SOS, a feature that came with the iPhone 14 in 2022, making them one of the first Android phones to have the feature. If you’re out of Wi-Fi or cell tower range, Pixel 9 devices will share your location and find emergency contacts via satellite. This isn’t a guaranteed get-out-of-jail-free card, though: It requires setup and an extra fee, and only works in the US for now. (Like Apple, it’s free for the first two years after activation.)

This year, the Pixel Watch 3 comes in two size options for the first time, with case sizes of 41mm and 45mm, the latter with a 40 percent larger screen. Google says the watch has the same “Actua” OLED display technology as its Pixel smartphones, which is twice as bright for better viewing on sunny days. You can also dim the brightness down to just 1 nit so it doesn’t blind you before you go to sleep.
