September is a bit of a transition month for games in 2024. The excitement of fall gaming hasn’t fully hit yet, but we’ve come away from a summer month that only featured a couple of interesting games. August finished strong with Star Wars Outlaws, and we’re looking to continue that trend with a number of games releasing that could potentially compete for best game of the year honors.
This month is a perfect representation of what I want every month in the gaming industry to be. There are games for every age, every platform, and almost every genre. That’s great for gamers, but a bit of a challenge for me as I have to pick just a few games that will grab your attention. It was tough, but we did it. So let’s take a look at some of the games releasing in September that you should make time to play.
1 Astro Bot
September 6
It’s off to a very strong start. Astro Bot has been getting nothing but positive press since it was announced, and I couldn’t be more excited. A colorful, approachable platform game feels like exactly what we all needed to start the month off right. The game has a lot more world and powers than Astro’s Playroom, which came bundled with the PS5, which is exactly what we were looking for after playing it. If it can find a good runtime that’s not too long and keeps offering fresh ideas, this game might just sweep some awards in December.
2 NBA 2K25
September 6
After two months of big football games, it’s time to move on to the NBA. I will fully admit that I’m not a fan of sports games in general, and I haven’t touched a basketball game since NBA Jam. That being said, I can fully understand the popularity of the NBA 2K games. Everything promised in the trailer, from improved shot control to animations, looks to raise the bar in simulation. I’m sure those who are interested in this game were already planning to buy it whether I pointed it out or not, but maybe some of you will give this game a try, even if you don’t usually like it.
3 Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2
September 9
Don’t let the name Warhammer scare you away. We understand how big and complex the world is, but Space Marine 2 can be enjoyed with just the basics: Space Marines with guns and chainswords killing aliens. Sounds good? The visuals of the game resemble a gory mix of Gears of War and Left for Dead, with thousands of enemies facing off against the might of Space Marines. As a co-op experience, we think this game is best enjoyed over a few weekends, if not your entire life.
4 The brave landowner
September 17
What a simple yet brilliant game idea! You control a comic book hero named Jot in a 2D side-scrolling game, but you can escape the story and jump into the real world for a 3D adventure. When Humgrump, the villain of the story, realizes that he has been written to make the heroes lose again and again, he tries to change the story by locking Jot out. If you like games where you’re a little guy in a big world, this game will be full of childlike wonder.
5 The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
September 26
I wonder why there isn’t more excitement online about the new Zelda game coming out at the end of next month? I don’t want to hear any “it’s 2D Zelda so it’s pointless” whining. Zelda is finally on her own adventure and I can’t wait to play with her new magical powers. Duplicating objects and enemies seems like an insane idea for making a game, but the fact that Nintendo tried it means they must have made something good. You shouldn’t expect the same world and freedom as Tears of the Kingdom, but with two games in that style I think a more focused adventure would be a better fit.
