As first reported by 9to5Google, a post from user X, @MysteryLupin, has leaked images of what appears to be the next generation of the excellent Google Nest Learning Thermostat. The third generation of the flagship Nest Learning Thermostat, which learns your habits and automatically adjusts your heating schedule accordingly, was released in 2015, so a new model has been long overdue. Combined with FCC filings uncovered by 9to5Google in June, these leaked images seem to confirm that a fourth generation is on the way and will likely be unveiled at the Made by Google event on January 24, 2020. August 13The new Google Pixel 9 is also expected to be launched.
The leaked images showed not only the new Nest Learning Thermostat, but also a new model Nest Temperature Sensor, which can be placed anywhere in your home and the smart thermostat will use readings from the temperature sensor to determine when to start and stop heating. This will override the smart thermostat’s own temperature readings to ensure another room in your home is at the perfect temperature. According to the leaked images, this new temperature sensor will work with the Nest Thermostat E, Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen), and the new Nest Learning Thermostat.

What do we know about the new Nest Learning Thermostat?
Physical dials appear to have survived
The images don’t reveal much about the new Nest Learning Thermostat, but it looks like the new model will retain a physical dial on the outside of the device. While being able to control it through an app is nice, sometimes you just want to quickly adjust the temperature without having to pull out your phone or speak to a virtual assistant. The third-gen Nest Learning Thermostat had a dial that you could rotate to turn the temperature up or down, and this dial appears to have been carried over to the fourth-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, even though the new model is much slimmer.
Based on images showing the new Nest Learning Thermostat side-by-side with the previous generation and the Nest Thermostat E, the new model also appears to be roughly the same size as the previous generation, and a bit larger than the Nest Thermostat E.
Judging by the FCC filing, it seems likely that the new model will have a Soli radar sensor similar to the one in 2020 Nest thermostats. This means that the new Nest Learning Thermostat will be able to detect your presence. This will be used to turn on the display when it detects your presence, but it could also be used to determine if someone is home.
New temperature sensor coming soon
The second generation sensor has a new design
The leaked photos also show what appears to be new second-generation Nest temperature sensors. These are quite different from the current cylindrical models, with a curved puck design that closely resembles the shape of the Google Nest Mini smart speaker. The images show that they are much smaller than the first-gen models, making them easier to place on a shelf without taking up too much space. Battery life has also been extended to three years versus the first-gen model’s two years.
Like the first generation, you can use multiple temperature sensors and set schedules to prioritize each sensor — for example, you could have your thermostat maintain the living room temperature at night and then switch it to maintain the bedroom temperature before you go to sleep. According to the leak, the new temperature sensors will sell for $39 each, or $99 for three, which matches the current price of the first-gen model.
