In the image below, two seabirds are caught up in a dramatic chase over the icy waters of northeastern Norway. A south polar skua ( Larus argentatus ) and a stinging eagle are caught in a sly attempt to steal fish.Stercorarius parasitikusu) tails a kittiwake (Lissa tridactyla) and mimic its flight pattern.
This striking image, taken by Alwin Hardenböll of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, won first prize in the “Relationships in Nature” category in the 2024 BMC Ecology & Evolution and BMC Zoology Image Competition. Brood parasitism (stealing food from other birds) is common among skuas.
