In 2022, #WeArePlay launched 153 stories about the people behind app and gaming companies across the U.S. Since then, we’ve taken a virtual tour around the world with stories from India, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Today, we’re returning to the U.S. to celebrate 153 new stories, three per state, showcasing more businesses growing on Google Play.
Below are just a few of my favorites:
Bernard’s app uses virtual reality to recreate ancient cities
Bloomington, Indiana
In the 70s, Bernard visited and was fascinated by the Plastico di Roma Imperiale, a replica of the Roman Empire during the time of Constantine the Great. This visit was the origin of his app Yorescape, which allows users to explore ancient ruins using virtual reality. Yorescape simulates world heritage sites with the help of virtual reality, using 3D reconstructions and expert audio guides. Users can explore ancient ruins and take a unique journey of time travel, showing current historical and ancient ruins side by side. Yorescape showcases ruins in Egypt, Lebanon, Greece, Italy and Mexico. He hopes to one day cover all the ruins in every corner of the Earth.
Pinky app uses AI to revolutionize maternal healthcare for all mothers
Norman, Oklahoma
Pinky was disappointed with the postnatal care she received after giving birth to her first child. As a pharmacist, personal trainer, and expert in pre- and postnatal corrective exercise, she knew she had a lot of knowledge to share. This experience led Pinky to found Myri Health, an AI-driven platform to transform pregnancy and postnatal support. She plans to launch in countries with high maternal mortality rates to improve healthcare for mothers around the world, and will integrate the app with Google Health Connect for a full continuum of care.
In Bria’s game, players can serve Japanese-themed characters in a bubble tea shop.
Los Angeles, California
Bria worked for some of the biggest names in the tech industry, but wanted to start her own company based on what brings her joy. Bubble tea is her go-to drink for fun times with friends, and she wanted to encapsulate that same feeling in Boba Story. In her game, players renovate an old bubble tea shop, designing the interior and drink menu, and serving bubble tea to Japanese anime-inspired characters. Recently, apiary gardens where players can harvest honey were added, along with a host of new bubble tea flavors.
Alina and Samara Games use micro-workouts to stay active
Hopkins, Minnesota
During the pandemic, while working 80-hour weeks, Alina found herself lacking time to exercise, but still found herself playing video games and browsing social media. This inspired her to create a fun and easy game to help people stay active. After posting a job online, she teamed up with Samara, a game programming teacher, to create a game called Fitment. The game makes exercise more accessible through engaging and fun gamified micro-workouts. The team is now working on rolling out social features to make the platform more interactive and encourage friends to get fit together.
