Apple to release new password management app “Passwords”

Apple will reportedly unveil a new password manager called Passwords at this year’s WWDC, which kicks off on June 10th.

This comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who claims that Apple plans to release the new app as part of iOS, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, all of which will likely debut next week.

The app will reportedly feature Apple’s password syncing service, iCloud Keychain, to generate and track passwords. Keychain is already a password manager of sorts, but it’s not exactly user-friendly, as it’s hidden in Apple’s settings and only appears when it recognizes a password field that needs to be filled out.

Password will allow users to organize their logins into different categories and will also be able to automatically fill in login and password fields when needed, the report said. Authenticator codes from the likes of Google Authenticator will also be supported.

Finally, the password works on Vision Pro as well as on Windows computers.

While this is probably not good news for third-party services like LastPass, Dashlane, and 1Password, which offer roughly the same functionality, it’s a logical step for Apple given that its own Keychain already does essentially the same thing, just in a less user-friendly way.

Aside from passwords, next week’s WWDC event is expected to be focused mainly on AI and probably won’t announce any new hardware. Read our expectations for the event here.

WWDC starts at 10am PST on June 10th, and if you can’t attend in person you can still watch the stream here.
