1 Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
Roguelike adventure
Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
Whether you recognize the name Dungeon Crawl or not, this community-driven sequel is a pure roguelike in a different way than most recent games that use that tag. You choose a race from around 30 options, including Gargoyle, Tengu, Demigo, and Vampire, each with their own unique stats, and also choose a background to serve as your class. From there, you’re thrust into fully randomized dungeons to explore, slay monsters, gather loot, and level up. The game has a steep learning curve, but is fully turn-based so you can progress at your own pace.
2 Dark Room
Creepy idle game
Dark Room
Idle games are great for leaving running in the background while you work, because there’s always progress even when you’re not playing. My personal favorite in this genre is “A Dark Room” because it’s a bit narrative, giving the whole experience a creepy and slightly unsettling atmosphere. As the name suggests, you start in a dark room, with your only option being to make a fire. From there, more options open up – what you can do outside the room, what resources you can gather, what you can invest in – and gradually automate more and more processes. It’s strangely addictive, but because it’s all done by text, it doesn’t seem like you’re playing a game right away when you get caught.
3 Open Guesser
Test your sense of direction
Open Guesser
Do you consider yourself to have a good sense of direction? Do you like to pretend to explore areas using Google Maps? If you answered yes to these two questions, then you should try OpenGuessr. It’s the exact same game as GeoGuessr, except you don’t have to pay a subscription fee to play. You’re placed in a random location on the globe, and your goal is to place a pin on the map as close to where you are as possible based on what you see around you. The closer you are, the more points you’ll earn.
4 Hurry up and draw!
Draw a picture and teach it to AI
Hurry up and draw!
I have a lot of questions about how to use AI, but this isn’t one of them. Quick, Draw! is a game where you try to draw ordinary objects as well as you can and get the AI to guess correctly. It’s like Pictionary, but you’re the one doing the drawing all the time. You’re given a short time limit for each drawing, so a round never takes more than 2 seconds. It’s a lot of fun to see how well your drawing skills can be expressed with a mouse. Or, in my case, it’s amazing to see how smart this AI is and how quickly it can correctly decipher confusing lines.
5 Slither
Snake and friends
Slither
We all know and love Snake, but what if it was a competitive multiplayer game? Slither.io is one of the most popular games on Itch.io because of its simplicity and “just one more” feeling. Like Snake, your goal is to eat as many dots as possible to grow longer, but you have to worry about not only your tail but also the tails of other players. Move the cursor to guide your snake, no need to turn in cardinal directions like in the old days. The map is vast, so there is always a risk of bumping into other players who are 10 times bigger than you. You can grow by yourself by staying away from other players, or play aggressively and eliminate other players by hitting them with your tail.
