When it comes When choosing a yoga mat, there’s more to it than just satisfying your third eye chakra. A stylish design may look great in yoga class, but choosing a mat that’s easy to move on and has a good grip is key to perfecting your poses. From dynamic movements like Dolphin Plank and Crow Pose to the restorative Shavasana at the end of your practice, a supportive, comfortable yoga mat can make all the difference.
“Grip is important when deciding which mat to use, to ensure you don’t slip as you sweat during your yoga session,” says celebrity personal trainer Peter Maciver of PMac Fitness. “It’s also important that the material feels good on the back of your hands so you can lie down and relax and balance. Choosing a mat made from a durable material that won’t wear down with heavy use and can be easily wiped down will also extend the life of your mat.”
Flexibility is also something to consider when deciding which yoga mat to buy. A mat that is portable and not too heavy to carry to class may be a key factor in your decision. Or are you looking for a design that can also be used for Pilates, Body Balance, and Body Pump classes? If so, look for a versatile mat that is made to accommodate all forms of exercise, not just Pigeon Pose.
