With the right AI image generator and some simple prompts, you can create anything.
What is DALL-E 3?
The latest version of OpenAI’s image generation tool

The first time I tried it, Generative AI I was really amazed, especially the first time I tried to get the AI to generate a code. The task was simple, but the chatbot was able to generate the exact code that did exactly what I asked it to do, in the time it took me to type out the first few lines of code.
The other was my first time trying out AI image generation. It was truly mind-blowing to type in a few words and have an image pop up exactly as I described it in just a few seconds. I was even more amazed when I realized it could create almost any image you could imagine.
DALL-E was the first AI image generation tool I tried in 2021, and it blew me away, even though in the early days the images often contained human faces that were far from human. The model was developed by OpenAI, the same company that developed ChatGPT. In 2022, DALL-E 2 DALL-E 3 has been released, capable of generating more realistic images. In September 2023, OpenAI released DALL-E 3, its most capable model to date.
Using DALL-E 3 with ChatGPT is easy
Simple prompts produce great results
Generating images in DALL-E 3 works best using long prompts, but the average ChatGPT user probably doesn’t want to type out long, detailed image prompts to get the best results. Luckily, you don’t have to – ChatGPT does the heavy lifting for you.
For example, in ChatGPT, you can type the prompt “Create an image of a horse” and the app will immediately generate an image for you using DALL-E 3. If you then ask ChatGPT what prompt it used to generate the image, you might be surprised to find that it’s not “Create an image of a horse” but something much more complicated. When I tried this with ChatGPT, the actual prompt used was:
A realistic image of a majestic horse standing in a grassland. The horse has shiny chestnut fur and a black mane and tail. In the background is a clear blue sky with fluffy clouds and distant trees can be seen on the horizon. The sunlight accentuates the horse’s muscular physique, giving it a strong and graceful appearance.
This allows DALL-E to create a much better image than if you simply gave it the prompt “Create an image of a horse”, which doesn’t provide enough detail to produce the best results.
Of course, you can also enter your own complex prompt if you want to create something specific.
You should also know that DALL-E 3 is not perfect. Some images are very difficult to generate. For example, it is really hard to get DALL-E 3 to generate an image of Santa with a mustache but no beard. Negative prompts are notoriously difficult for AI to deal with. It’s a lot like the old adage about asking someone not to think about an elephant. Of course, if you think about an elephant, you’ll immediately think about an elephant.
ChatGPT is not the only way to use DALL-E 3 for free
Free access for Bing users under Microsoft deal
The ability to generate free images with DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT is useful if ChatGPT is your chatbot of choice, but the two image limit is not that great – if the first two images you generate are not as expected, you will have to wait to generate the next one.
However, ChatGPT isn’t the only place you can access DALL-E 3 for free. Thanks to an agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI, you can also use DALL-E 3 for free in the following places: First Officer (formerly known as Bing Chat) can be used by signing in with a free Microsoft account.
All you need to do is go to www.bing.com/chat and sign in with your Microsoft account. After that, you can generate images just by asking Copilot, and it will generate images for you using DALL-E 3. Plus, you get a lot more images than the 2nd generation.
Thanks to an agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI, you can also use DALL-E 3 for free with Copilot (formerly Bing Chat) if you sign in with a free Microsoft account.
But interestingly, after using the simple prompt, I asked Copilot what prompt it used to create the image, and the prompt it returned was the same simple prompt I typed in. Using DALL-E 3’s simple prompt in ChatGPT seemed to produce better results than Copilot, which tended to produce cartoon-like images rather than realistic ones from the simple prompt, but results may vary from person to person.
