Key Takeaways
- Deadpool and Wolverine are the only Marvel Studios films scheduled for release in 2024
- The film has an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been criticized for its formulaic storyline.
- The new movie doesn’t quite live up to the high standards set by previous Deadpool movies.
Deadpool and Wolverine officially hits theaters this weekend, but it has the interesting double distinction of being the only Marvel Studios film coming out in 2024 and the first ever to receive an “R” rating. With nonstop promotion and a lot of hype from Marvel fans, the stakes are pretty high for this release, leading some to wonder if this could be the title that turns the MCU around after some lackluster performances. Our own Anthony Marcasa called the film “nostalgic comfort food, full of blood and foul language” in his review, adding that it “does more to the memory of 20th Century Fox than the current MCU does.” And it seems he’s not the only one with mixed feelings about Marvel’s latest release.

Critics have praised the acting but seem less impressed with the third Deadpool film.
Currently, Deadpool & Wolverine holds an 81% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critic consensus stating, “Ryan Reynolds fits right into the MCU with his acerbic wit, while Hugh Jackman provides the adamantium backbone of Deadpool & Wolverine, an irreverent adventure with a surprising affection for superhero movies of the past.” However, it is worth noting that many of the individual reviews posted have criticized the film’s formulaic plot and lack of new ideas, with the film’s “Top Critics” Tomatometer score being much lower, at 64%. Still, the overall reception seems to be largely favorable, despite some caveats.
So how does this new Deadpool compare to the rest of the series?

When the first Deadpool film was released in 2016, critics praised its irreverent tone and fresh approach to superhero movies, with the original earning an 85% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest of the entire series. Critics’ consensus for the film was that it was “fast-paced, funny, and delightfully raunchy”, adding that it “subverts superhero movie conventions with a highly entertaining but decidedly not family-friendly result.”
With the bar set so high by the first film, expectations were high for Deadpool 2 when it was released in 2018. Luckily, the sequel managed to expertly recreate the same appeal as Deadpool’s debut, earning a nearly identical 84% Tomatometer rating to the first film and being called a “gory, hilarious satire of the superhero genre, bolstered by the undeniable charm of Ryan Reynolds.”
While Deadpool & Wolverine’s 81% “fresh” rating is roughly in line with the critics’ reviews of its predecessor, it’s clear that Deadpool’s first film under the Marvel Studios banner hasn’t translated into a meaningful improvement for the series as some had hoped. Of course, it remains to be seen whether these critical reactions will have a significant impact on Deadpool & Wolverine’s box office performance, but the film is poised to be a blockbuster this weekend. Pre-release projections have Marvel’s latest film expected to open with a record-breaking $160 to $170 million, which would be the biggest opening weekend of any R-rated film ever (according to Variety).
