Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters at an interesting, and perhaps pivotal, time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Under Kevin Feige’s direction, the so-called Multiverse Saga has struggled to build excitement and coherence, and there’s been a lot of speculation and criticism, both legitimate and malicious, about the health of the MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine, the only MCU movie of 2024, brings two popular mutants and their respective franchises into an interwoven story world across time and space. Fans and studios alike have high hopes for the success of the movie. Find out what happened at the end and what it means for the future.
Spoilers follow for Deadpool and Wolverine’s ending and all after-credits scenes.
What will happen to Deadpool and Wolverine in the end?
Who is alive and who is dead?
20th Century Studios/Marvel.
After a lengthy battle with a horde of Deadpools from the void, in what appears to be the same set Marvel uses for its street battle scenes, Deadpool and Wolverine join forces to destroy the MacGuffin: the Time Ripper.
Paradox rushes to set the stakes up front, and Deadpool and Wolverine deliver their ridiculously familiar lines about who should be sacrificed: They’re both willing to die for the cause, but of course, their regenerative powers are too strong, so neither of them die. How convenient.

Deadpool and Wolverine is the gory, R-rated MCU movie millennials have been waiting for
The first R-rated MCU film bids farewell to Fox with a familiar storyline and some clever references.
As a result, Earth-10005 is saved; Paradox is interrogated by the TVA, Cassandra is blown to pieces by an explosion, Deadpool and Wolverine are both allowed to live their own lives, with the latter remaining in this alternate timeline without Wolverine, and most importantly, Deadpool is reunited with his new adopted son, Dogpool.
What is a post-credit scene?
How long should I stay after the movie is over?
20th Century Studios/Marvel.
There are two end-of-the-road scenes in Deadpool & Wolverine. The first is another of the film’s contradictions. It’s basically a lament to Fox’s collection of superhero movies, which includes not only the X-Men series but also behind-the-scenes footage from The Fantastic Four, Blade, and Daredevil. And of course, because the film is aimed at millennials, Green Day’s Time of Your Life plays throughout the footage.
It’s a saccharine, sugary, completely unnecessary compliment, and also kind of cute in a way.
The final scene after the end credits finds Deadpool about to reveal the truth about a past death in the film. He is held responsible for the brutal death of the Human Torch, but Deadpool asks to check the tape. It’s a funny scene not only for its content but also for its context, and the film allows an actor who has long played wholesomeness and bravado on screen to play a completely vulgar and unpleasant character. Well done!

What to Watch Before Deadpool and Wolverine
Two iconic superheroes who have appeared in over 10 films will be joining the sprawling MCU that has decades of history, so what do you need to know?
Will we see these characters again?
Deadpool, Wolverine and other fates
20th Century Studios/Marvel.
Deerpool and Wolverine are based on Earth-10005, and X-23 is there too. TVA knows them and they know TVA, so anything really can happen in the future. There have been plenty of jokes about Hugh Jackman being forced to continue playing Wolverine now that he’s in the Disney family, but it seems a bit unlikely that we’ll ever see that actually happen. Logan It was a fantastic send-off film, tense and dramatic enough to be a near perfect separation. Deadpool and Wolverine It doesn’t actually undo all that much, but it feels like a triumphal march for that character to do everything that wasn’t done before, which probably means saying goodbye again.
The movie starts with Deadpool being rejected by the Avengers, and by the end, none of them are coming. It’s unlikely that Deadpool will return in any capacity, but his style and attitude are so unique that it may be hard to slide him easily into other franchises with other characters. Whether and how they return will depend on the success of the movie.
This appears to be the final goodbye for our friends from the void, but Dogpool is alive and well.

How to watch every Marvel movie and TV show in chronological order
The Marvel Cinematic Universe began in 2008 and is still going strong. Here’s the entire MCU timeline, including shows and movies.
What does this mean for the MCU?
Is Marvel back? Or has it ever left?
20th Century Studios/Marvel.
To be honest, I don’t think anything that happens in this movie will have much meaning for the future storyline of the MCU. Deadpool and other characters may return to their own stories, join up with others, or simply never return. It doesn’t really advance the Multiverse Saga, but it doesn’t stop or subvert it either. This movie will definitely make a ton of money, at least revitalize the MCU, and at least provide a bit of a change of pace.
But it’s weird because the story is pretty weak overall and surprisingly similar to Marvel. In that team-up movie, heroes who hate each other are forced to work together to stop a super-powered underdeveloped villain until they’re conveniently stopped. One hero is cold and wants to be alone, while the other is too excited and can’t stop talking. Both movies also feature the X-Men, who are sacrificed at the end, but not in the end, leaving one hero in an alternate timeline.
It’s unclear what Marvel Studios will get out of this film, but on the bright side, it gives them time to take a breather and rethink their next steps. It’s kind of refreshing that Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t develop a ton of new storylines and threads or hint at a ton of new characters. It’s time for the MCU to stop branching out and start cleaning up.
