On November 30, 2010, I posted an article about an inscription discovered near the South Bass Trail of the Grand Canyon. The inscription features the word “Montevideo” in a beautifully ornate style. You can find that post and its associated story here. A few days later, I posted an addendum, which you can find here.
Recently, a friend of my wife’s visited the site and stumbled upon another adjacent inscription which dates to 1896. This does not prove that the Montevideo inscription was left during the time of William Wallace Bath at the Grand Canyon, but it does indicate that baths were leading people to the site at that time. I think the nearby inscription lends credence to the idea that Montevideo is newer than the 1540s and was by a member of the Cardenas party. Photos above and below are courtesy of Larry Kinser.
