We must answer the age-old question: “Why should I buy a new edition if I have the first edition?” The main reasons are:
1) All 70+ paleogeographic maps are fully updated with new information, as Ron Blakey continually updates the maps with the latest geological information and more advanced computer tools. Additionally, we expanded the area covered by each map to include more of Nevada and California, which play a prominent role in the geological history of the Colorado Plateau.

2) Old maps have been moved to a dedicated section in the book, and when you flip through the map you’ll see an animation over time. Each map’s description then appears adjacent to the map on the opposite side of the spread.
Coconino Sandstone Sample Page – All information shown on the map The opposite side of the spread contains a photo of the deposit. |
3) Most of the photos throughout this book have been upgraded and replaced. Most are of much higher quality and higher resolution (the first edition in 2008 relied heavily on photos scanned from film slides and had a sub-optimal resolution). Here are two examples.
