Fitbit loses more features by discontinuing web app

It seems like Google has made Fitbit’s user experience significantly worse.

The fitness-focused wearables brand, which Google acquired in 2021, announced in a community forum post that the web browser interface for viewing users’ individual health metrics will be shut down on July 8. Going forward, the only way to access Fitbit stats will be via the mobile app.

“Combined with Google’s decades of best-in-class data interpretation, our mission is to bring Fitbit and Google together as one team,” the post read. “Integrating the Fitbit.com dashboard into the Fitbit app is part of that mission, allowing us to focus on features that provide even more valuable insights for our users.”

As users on the forums and at Ars Technica have pointed out, there are a couple of big problems with this. First, certain features from the website, like advanced graphs, seem to be currently missing from the mobile app. Second, the Fitbit app doesn’t work on tablets, so anyone who, for any reason, needs or wants to see their fitness data on a larger screen is likely stuck here.

Presumably Google will make the necessary efforts to resolve these issues, but the announcement didn’t leave much hope in that regard.
