The tempos of songs released by many popular musicians increase into the early 30s, but then gradually decrease, dropping below teenage levels by the 50s.
“We saw a very clear downward trend,” says Jeff Lack of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, “and we’re convinced that there’s a real decline in tempo over the course of the lifespan.”
Beats per minute, or tempo, is an important characteristic of music that can be used to convey a range of emotions.
