The Olympic match recreated a key scene from a popular volleyball manga, in which teams Japan and Argentina face off in the Olympic final. The moment is only hinted at in the manga, with Hinata and Kageyama from Karasuno High School, Japan, facing off against their longtime rival, Oikawa, from Argentina. The winner of the Olympic match was never revealed in the pages of the manga, but some fans would like to believe that setter Oikawa won.

Unfortunately for Argentina, that wasn’t the case in the real match today, as Japan defeated Argentina 3-1 in a preliminary round Pool C match at the South Paris Arena.

The anime’s opening song “FLY HIGH” Haikyu!!“Phoenix” was played immediately after Japan’s victory. (During the warm-up, one of the anime’s theme songs, “Phoenix,” was played.) Some fans were seen wearing towels bearing the names of Nekoma and Inarizaki high schools, which represent the rival schools in the manga.
