I’m a vapor. Like many others, I used to smoke but switched to e-cigarettes for health reasons. I’m planning to quit completely, but I haven’t been able to quit yet. I’m sure vaping is better for me than smoking, but I’m also sure it’s worse than not vaping. I cough in the morning and feel like I’m addicted to nicotine. I don’t even really know what I’m inhaling. I worry that it will be difficult to quit, that I’m doing long-term damage to my body, and that vaping will send me back down the slope to cigarettes. I also have the same concern for teenagers who come out of school and are immediately surrounded by a cloud of sweet scents.
As e-cigarette use increases in Western countries, these fears have become more frequently repeated. Part of the King’s Speech in Britain last month focused on new legislation aimed at creating a smoke-free generation by cracking down on young people’s use of e-cigarettes. A growing number of children are admitting to vaping, prompting calls around the world for stronger regulations and more research into the health effects of e-cigarettes.
However, much remains to be said about whether concerns about health effects are well-founded…
