How to attach a song to your Instagram profile
Get as creative or boring as you want.
Getting started with this new feature is easy: the only prerequisite is that you have an Instagram account.
- Open the Instagram app.
- Go to your profile.
- choice Edit Profile.
- choice Add music to your profile.
- Search for and select a song.
- Select a 30-second portion of the song.
Select 30 seconds of a song you like and it will appear on your profile. You can remove or replace a song by tapping it from your profile. The song you select will remain on your profile until you remove or change it. The selection tool itself for attaching a song to your profile is nearly identical to the one for attaching to an Instagram Story or Reel.
Once you’ve selected a song, you can change it by tapping on it or through the Edit Profile menu.
When viewing a profile with music attached, the song does not autoplay. Instead, tapping a song plays a snippet of the song the user selected. This feature is certainly reminiscent of MySpace, but not exactly the same. The lack of autoplay is probably a good thing.

You can attach music to your Instagram profile, but why?
Part promotion, part nostalgia. Totally baffling.
While the feature’s arrival on Instagram feels a bit odd, to say the least, there’s a purpose behind this nostalgic frenzy: The feature served in part as a promotion for Sabrina Carpenter’s album, “Short n’ Sweet,” allowing users to get a taste of Carpenter’s new single, “Taste,” ahead of the album’s release.
Of course, a larger feature rollout would probably not just be for promotional purposes. So why do it? The feature feels a bit old-fashioned, but at the same time it adds an interesting layer of personalization. Clearly there is a market for MySpace nostalgia, but is it big enough to justify implementing this kind of feature on Instagram?
Reactions to the feature’s announcement on Instagram creator pages were mostly comparisons to MySpace. “Is the Top 8 next?” one user asked, referencing MySpace’s Top 8 friends space. Many more pointed out that the feature was nostalgic for millennials. Even MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson commented on the announcement, writing simply “🔥🔥🔥.”
What you think about this feature is up to you, but it’s definitely interesting. It’s unclear how this will affect future additions to Instagram profiles, but for now, it looks like more personalized profiles are on the rise again.
