When you think about it, Apple TV+ might be Apple’s most unconventional product yet. It’s hard to imagine the Mac and iPhone maker trying to compete with Netflix. But the streaming service is worth checking out, with some great shows like Manhunt, Severance, and Masters of the Air. Apple also releases the occasional great movie, like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

If you want to try it out on the cheap, or even completely for free, you have a few options. The best option for you depends on your situation and how much time you want to watch.

How to get Apple TV+ for free

Buy a new Apple device

Admittedly, it’s not completely “free,” but Apple is offering three months of Apple TV+ for free with every new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV 4K purchase. There are some other restrictions. The offer is only available to new or returning Apple TV+ subscribers, and you must request the trial within 90 days of purchasing the device. And if you don’t want your subscription to auto-renew, be sure to cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the trial period.

It’s important to note that while the Apple One trial is good for one month, it only applies to services you don’t already subscribe to, meaning you can’t sign up for a separate trial of Apple TV+ and then use One to extend the trial.

While Apple and its partners tend not to offer discounts for Apple TV+, there are some bundle options that can make it relatively cheap.

Apple Music Student Plan: Not only is the student plan cheaper than the others ($5.99/month in the US), but it also includes Apple TV+ as a perk. But there are some caveats: You’ll need to verify your enrollment in college and re-verify each year the plan is active. But you only need to re-verify once, because the contract expires after 48 months or when you leave school, whichever comes first. If you don’t cancel, it will roll over to an individual plan.
Apple One: That’s only “cheap” if you’re already looking to subscribe to most or all of the bundled services, but in that respect it’s a bargain: US options start at $19.95 per month, which is cheaper than Apple Music and Apple TV+ each on their own.
