Wildfires in the western United States are likely to worsen an alarming trend of smoke rising higher into the atmosphere. As fires spread due to climate change, storm clouds that carry smoke into the stratosphere are more likely to form.
“The heights at which the plumes of these very large wildfires rise are where the most area is burning and are likely producing the most smoke,” said the researchers, who published the study at the American Geophysical Society. says Derek Mallia of the University of Utah.
