In early August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a sixth drug to reverse opioid overdoses. Called Zurnay, the product is an auto-injector of the drug nalmefene made by Purdue Pharma, the same pharmaceutical company that helped fuel the opioid crisis.
Irony aside, this is, at least on the surface, a welcome addition to the ever-growing arsenal of drugs to fight the opioid crisis. Nalmefene is more powerful and longer acting than the more common naloxone, which has a diminishing effect on opioids…
