I’m a bad sleeper, so I tried out five watches from Shock & Roll (2024)

Deep sleepers know How easy it is to oversleep an overly sophisticated alarm on your phone. For those who can’t get out of bed without a louder bang, extreme alarms have appeared in recent years, from relatively simple puzzle alarm phone apps to alarms on wheels and bed-shaking alarms. Not only are these an innovative way to wake chronic sleepers, but they also use different frequencies and pitches, as well as vibration-based movements, making them perfect for people with hearing loss.

I’m such a terrible sleeper that I tried out these non-traditional extreme alarms every day for a week. I chose the extreme alarms that were the most highly rated and reviewed online, and most commonly found at online retailers like Amazon and in app stores, to try to get versatile options that focus on different areas, like sound and activity. Which Extreme Alarm is Right for You?

This all depends on the problem of getting out of bed.

If you’re a chronic oversleeper, choose an alarm that physically gets you out of bed. Many types incorporate movement to get the blood flowing and shake off sleepiness, like Clocky, an alarm on wheels, or an alarm clock that shoots a target to stop it.

If you are hearing impaired, some of these alarms have adjustable pitch and volume, which is useful for certain ranges of hearing loss. Some of these alarms have a vibrating pad that can be inserted between the mattress and box spring or under the top sheet to wake the sleeper with a vibrating motion. There are also wristwatch-style clocks that shock the sleeper, which is useful for people sleeping with partners who do not want to be disturbed by noise.
