Instagram is rolling out AI chatbot version for creators, says Mark Zuckerberg

Yet another AI news story that might have you wondering, “Who asked this?” Meta is rolling out AI chatbots based on real creators.

That’s right! Creators may soon be able to send direct messages to Instagram’s AI chatbots that resemble themselves. That would be… awesome, right?

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself made the announcement.

“We’re rolling out initial tests of AI Studio in the US, so you may start seeing AI from your favourite creators and interest-based AI on Instagram in the coming weeks. For now, these will primarily appear in messages and will be clearly labelled as AI,” he said.

Popular creators likely receive more messages than they can parse, so this would be a way to outsource that work to an AI, but I’d say that talking to a chatbot is a long way from a real conversation. I agree.

Instead of having human interaction with the creators and celebrities you admire, you get to speak to an artificial amalgam of their personalities — a shadow of the real thing. Plato would be proud.

TechCrunch reported that Meta will begin rolling out to 50 creators and a limited number of Insta users first, then expand over the next few months before launching fully by August.

Maybe some will find the experience novel, but it feels like just another AI solution with a problem: chatting with an AI version of a real person is pretty lonely. Either way, Instagram will soon let you do just that.
