There’s a new way to create an AI version of yourself, and it’s easier than ever before.
Meta has announced the availability of AI Studio to its US users, a tool that allows users to create AI versions of themselves, as well as custom AI characters of all kinds.
There are two ways to interact with AI Studio: either by visiting ai.meta.com/ai-studio or by using the Instagram app on your phone. On Instagram, simply open Messaging, start a new message, and tap “Create AI Chat.”

Next, a character creation wizard will launch, allowing you to set your AI character’s name, personality, tone of voice, avatar, and catchphrase. Meta has actually created an 18-page PDF document, the AI Studio Handbook, that explains how to get the most out of AI Studio.
AI characters are not just avatars, they have specific knowledge and unique personalities.

The AI characters you create aren’t just AI-ified avatars – they’re actual AI-powered characters with specific knowledge and personalities. You can also set topics you don’t want your AI bot to talk about and accounts you don’t want it to interact with. Responses from your AI character are also labeled, so the AI can’t actually take your place and interact with people pretending to be you.
To showcase the tool’s capabilities, Meta has compiled a list of some characters created by celebrities and professionals, including chef Marc Murphy and photographer and videographer Angel Barclay.
Apple’s AI features reportedly delayed
However, this comes with a big caveat: it’s only for US users. This means that European users, for example, won’t be able to create their own characters, or even see AI characters created by others, including the ones listed above. The European Union in particular has specific rules regarding AI, and companies like Meta and Apple have been very careful about their AI efforts in Europe.
