Anyone who saw the first trailer or especially the new trailer Joker: Two Lovers There’s a hunch this movie is going to be good: Director Todd Phillips and Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix, along with Lady Gaga reprising the unforgettable character, seem like a winning combination. And while the movie doesn’t hit theaters until October 4, one person who’s seen it confirms all that and more.
In addition to releasing the new trailer today, the prestigious Venice Film Festival Joker: Two Lovers is one of the films being screened at the festival, and festival director Alberto Barbera told Deadline how impressed he is with the films being screened at the festival. Joker Sequel.
“Though it’s a continuation of the story, the film is very different from the first one,” said director Barbera. “If you’re expecting the same thing, violence or anything like that, you’ll be surprised. I saw the film in Los Angeles in early February, and there were four or five people in the screening room, including screenwriter Scott Silver, and when the screening ended, we were all just hanging there, mouths hanging open. It’s a darker film.”
The first movie is a “dark movie”. It’s pretty dark. Plus, isn’t this sequel supposed to be a musical? Aren’t musicals usually the opposite of dark? “It’s a dystopian musical, or a kind of musical,” Barbera continues. “I think it’s one of the most daring, brave, creative pieces of American cinema in recent times, and I think Todd Phillips has really proven himself to be one of the most creative directors working today.”
Let’s read that again: “One of the most daring, brave and creative works in recent American cinema.” If this person is a critic and isn’t promoting his own film festival, Warner Bros. could just stop promoting it right now and move on. Of course, that’s not going to happen, but it certainly makes us even more curious about what’s to come this fall.
Joker: Two Lovers It will open on October 4th.
