Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): The president is not going to run for a second term. Oh my goodness, I’m going to run. Oh my goodness.
Dan Egan (Reid Scott): Wow, wow, wow. Hold on ma’am, can you please show me these poop ears straight up, is this for real?
Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): That was completely—
Dan Egan (Reid Scott): Yeah.
Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus): actually.
Dan Egan (Reid Scott): Ah, thank you.
Hunter Harris: People I know Veep I can tell you with all my heart that this is our season.
Leah Fager: It’s very good.
Hunter Harris: But really, the way Kamala Harris was undermined both publicly and privately was outrageous.
Leah Fager: Yes, of course.
Hunter Harris: And I think the degree to which the Biden campaign basically hid her worked in her favor.
Leah Fager: Yeah.
Hunter Harris: Because people had forgotten that the reasons the internet and young people were so averse to Kamala – her record as a prosecutor, her stance on Gaza – were that she was not as progressive as she appeared.
Leah Fager: Yeah, absolutely. Yes, she came out of nowhere. It’s an underdog story, that sort of thing, but she’s the incumbent, so it’s really interesting.
Hunter Harris: It is shocking that someone who has been so close to the presidency for the past four years is being portrayed as the underdog in this story.
Leah Fager: Yeah.
Hunter Harris: But I think she wears it very well.
Leah Fager: Yeah.
Hunter Harris: …Yeah, I’m curious when all of this is going to change and what the politics will be.
Leah Fager: Ah, yes.
Hunter Harris: … When we start talking about politics again and not about pop culture, it ends up feeling like we’re back to not having any fun again.
Leah Fager: Well, I guess that leads me to the question of is Brat Summer over? Let’s talk about that. Biden dropped out, Charli XCX wrote that she’s an X and Kamala is a Brat. The Harris campaign jumped on this and made major changes to their social media. They’re doing things the Biden campaign never dreamed of with social media. What do you see changing trends, things shifting, discussions around it? For example, there can’t be a Brat Summer in October.
Hunter Harris: Yes, I agree. I think phenomena like Brat Summer will die down eventually. President Obama just put Brat songs on his annual summer playlist. And I said, “Hey, what are you talking about? I’m not going to let you down.”
Leah Fager: Kudos to the intern who is right up there on top. I look at that whole playlist and I’m like, “Wow, this is amazing.”
Hunter Harris: His failure to include Chappell Roan is a total bummer to me, as is the lack of Summer Music Stories on his playlist.
Leah Fager: I was looking for “Hot to Go” and wanted to see it come up on Obama’s playlist.
