This weekend, Baldur’s Gate 3 And its first release on PC. Larian’s fantasy RPG was a huge boon for Hasbro. Not only was it one of the biggest games of 2023, it was an almost instant commercial hit and won a ton of year-end awards. Naturally, people wanted more, and it turns out Larian was seriously considering giving it to them.
In a recent interview with PCGamer, Larian CEO Sven Vincke said the team was once Dungeons & Dragons They wanted to do something new in the setting after finishing development on a blockbuster. Everyone wanted more, and they were still in the production heat, so they explored the possibility of an expansion (or standalone title) that would just add levels and create new stories. Then they realized that an expansion wasn’t worth the effort, so they escalated to a full sequel, something that at least feels playable, but probably wouldn’t be released until 2027 at best.
What ultimately prevented this idea from moving forward was time. Baldur’s Gate 3 It would take a few years, and the idea of ”doing it again” didn’t seem very appealing. Vincke voiced the idea in an internal meeting, and everyone agreed to go ahead and not make a sequel or expansion. He later announced the studio’s plans to the public at GDC 2024, and it seemed like the best decision. He called the decision a godsend, and perhaps helped that all of Larian’s partners at Wizards at the Coast who helped make the game were fired late last year.
It would be easy for Larian to rest. Baldur’s Gate 3 While the accolade is well-deserved, Vincke is thinking about “how do we do something that excites us?” The studio is currently working on two projects simultaneously (one codenamed “Excalibur”), and Vincke seems happy to be “doing our own thing again.” “We’re not rehashing anything or trying to rewrite 50-year-old rules. Morale is very high and I can’t tell you how free we feel.”
Considering the huge blow Baldur’s Gate 3 Hasbro and Wizards are probably looking for another studio to take over, so it may be a while before we hear anything about that, but until then, Larian’s epic saga awaits you with plenty of games and an epilogue.
