Coral reefs may be better able to adapt to hotter, more acidic oceans than we realize, and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and restore coral reefs will help protect these biodiversity. There are growing hopes that the rich ecosystem could be preserved.
“These results provide us with a possible path forward, but it depends entirely on what we do about climate change,” said Chris Jury of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. “And it depends on what we decide to do about local stressors.”
