Let Loose felt like Apple’s best event in recent memory

Important points

  • Apple’s May 2024 Let Loose event introduced the new iPad Pro with M4 chip, iPad Air, exciting software, and impactful upgrades.
  • This event showed that Apple can make concise and powerful announcements without excessive runtime or repetitive content.
  • The long iPad release cycle has sparked expectations for major upgrades to the M4 iPad Pro and new iPad Air.

Apple’s Let Loose event has come and gone, but with it came a myriad of exciting announcements regarding Apple’s exciting lineup of tablets. Between the new M4 chip, the 13-inch iPad Air, the ultra-thin iPad Pro, and a wealth of exciting new software announcements, there was a lot to be excited about at the latest Apple event.

But it’s also worth noting that this was a significant improvement compared to what Apple has been up to recently. Events like Scary Fast, Wonderlust, and Far Out all featured expected product announcements from Apple, but none of them were as flashy as Let Loose. Although it may seem strange, there is a good reason behind this idea.

The most obvious element to a good launch is a good product to launch. Steve Jobs’ introduction of the first iPhone was iconic, but he wouldn’t have been remembered as much if the iPhone hadn’t been so good. Similarly, the biggest perk of Let Loose was that the announcement had real weight.

The biggest perk of Let Loose was that the announcement had actual weight.

2023 marks the first year since the launch of the original iPad that no new iPad was released. We can now see that this slight change in formula was the right choice, as the new iPad Pro looks like a great tablet. It goes without saying that the newly announced Apple Pencil Pro brings some great new features.

Other recent Apple events have featured product announcements like the M3 MacBook Pro and iPhone 15. These products are good, but they weren’t that different from the previous generation. Just as iPhone 14 users probably don’t need the iPhone 15, people with M2 MacBook Pros can probably stick with the M1.

However, the new iPad Pro has significantly improved functionality. Along with the new iPad Air, it’s also the only device that works with the new Apple Pencil Pro. This wasn’t a shocking announcement by any means, but it was a much more exciting upgrade than going from one iPhone to the next. Also covered was the announcement of the M4 chip, although the M3 chip has only been on the market for six months.

“Evil Dead,” “Chronicles” and “Toy Story” all had similar screen times as Apple’s September event “Wonderlust,” which announced the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. did. However, it is not necessarily the case that the event ends. An hour long is a problem when it doesn’t really say that much. However, casting Octavia Spencer as “Mother Nature” in a skit about sustainability was both coincidental and symbolic.

It’s even worse when you consider that Apple creates an iconic overview image for each product it releases. The video presentation probably doesn’t need to be long if he can condense the new details of the product into one image. Especially when a lot of the presentation time is spent trying to see if you can call something “awesome” or add any arbitrary words.

“Best of all time” label.

The Let Loose event had a start time of 38 minutes. In just 38 minutes, Apple announced two new iPads, accessories, and the next generation of Apple Silicon. And there was a lot more to talk about upgrading to the new iPad Pro than the usual iterative iPhone upgrade. Apple didn’t even have to cut the superlatives to shorten the length. The presentation was fast-paced and very to the point in most aspects. There’s no reason why Apple would need to go back to an event the length of some short movie to present truly exciting new information about upcoming products.

The last time Apple held an event to announce a new iPad was in March 2022, a little over two years ago. One more year may not seem like a long time from a product standpoint, but those two years have resulted in a new version of one of Apple’s major product lineups. can now be more easily evaluated.

Compare that to how long you have to wait to find out about a new Mac, a new iPhone, or a new Apple Watch. New product lineups are introduced every year for all of these product lineups. Apple Watch and iPhone in particular receive updates around the same time every year. It’s largely predictable, and it’s usually well known in advance that a new iPhone won’t be much of an upgrade over its immediate predecessor.

However, most people are willing to admit that waiting two or three generations makes upgrading more important. For example, iPhone 12 Pro users who jump to the iPhone 14 Pro will get a higher refresh rate, similar to Dynamic Island. This is in addition to repeated battery life, processing power, and camera upgrades that typically come with annual upgrades.

So it’s not really surprising that the M4 iPad Pro appears to be one of Apple’s biggest upgrades ever. Rather than step-by-step building on his M3 iPad Pro, which has some of the cool new software features we think the M4 iPad Pro has, we’ve jumped straight from his M2 model here. Of course, this doesn’t apply to the M2 iPad Air either. That’s because the two-year-old model had an M1 chip. But even without a huge spec bump, this announcement still felt a little more important considering it’s been two years and the lineup has grown into a new size.

In both cases, it’s clear that the extra space of a year without any news about the new iPad helped create excitement for the new model. It’s unlikely that Apple will incorporate this lesson into its iPhone lineup, but it’s still an interesting one. What’s even more interesting is to imagine how much more exciting and even better the iPad Air launch would have been if we had had a few more months.
