An eight-week meditation program led the women to experience more empathy towards strangers, suggesting that meditation may improve the ability to understand and experience the emotions of others.
“When you practice mindfulness meditation, you naturally develop feelings of connection, empathy, and compassion, almost as a side effect,” says Fadel Zeidan of the University of California, San Diego. This type of meditation, the practice of focusing on the present moment by observing sensations such as breathing, is believed to reduce and help people feel less self-conscious.
