Modern people and Mesopotamian people embody emotions in different ways

The inhabitants of Mesopotamia must have known sadness, fear, love, and awe, but they didn’t necessarily think the same way we do. Analysis of cuneiform texts shows that these ancient people felt disgust in their shins, pain in their armpits, and sexual arousal in their ankles. This research reveals that culture and knowledge have important influences on our understanding of our own emotions.
