Meta changes Instagram and Facebook AI labels after backlash

Meta is already changing how it labels AI-generated content on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

In a statement released on July 1, the company said it relies on “industry-standard metrics” to make informed decisions about how to approach AI content. Previously, the label read “Created with AI,” but will now have the broader title “AI Information,” which covers how AI is used to create photos and videos posted to the Meta app.

The change came after backlash from creators and photographers, as well as confusion among regular users about what “Made with AI” actually means on the Meta platform.

“Like others across the industry, we’ve found that our labels based on these metrics don’t always align with people’s expectations and don’t provide enough context,” the updated blog post said.

The new labels will indicate content that has been created and/or modified using AI.
