Google launches Ad Transparency Center

Just like TikTok and Meta before it, Google is launching an ad library called the Google Ads Transparency Center. The new tool will allow users to see what ads advertisers are running, in which regions, and the dates of their campaigns. Limited to a 30 day period.

There is no information about the campaign intent or audience, but the creative assets are visible.

You can access this tool from the three-dot menu in ads or from the ads center. The launch is underway and will be available worldwide in the coming weeks.

Meta users will be able to opt out of personalized ads in Europe

With deadlines looming in Europe to be both DMA and DSA compliant, Meta has started setting up several solutions. So far, Meta plans to allow users in Europe to opt out of highly personalized ads on both Facebook and Instagram.

This is only available to users residing within the European Union, and there is no date yet for this feature to be available, but it shouldn’t be long. In addition to this, Meta is also discussing a company-wide ban on political advertising in Europe. The scope of what can be defined as political advertising is still under consideration.

Google Play launches alternative billing in the UK

The new alternative billing is expected to be available by October 2023 at the latest. This comes in response to a UK inquiry into Google’s practices. Google will reduce service fees by 30% and:

  • 26% if using Google Play system with alternative billing
  • 27% for users who do not offer the option to pay via Google Play

This is not a huge difference to the 30% fee that has been criticized, but the UK CMA has indicated that it is open to this solution.

Advertisers must register with Twitter Blue to advertise on the platform

One of the social media platform’s latest announcements after a long list of changes to Twitter Blue certification is that only Twitter Blue accounts will be able to advertise within the app.

Twitter previously introduced Twitter Blue for businesses starting at $1,000 per month, but the company said professional accounts that already earn more than $1,000 per month may be granted Twitter Blue at no additional charge. It is said that there is.

But social media platforms aren’t doing so well. Many users have started blocking Twitter Blue accounts in protest of all the recent changes (particularly the decision to make tweets by Twitter Blue accounts public and have more visibility than regular accounts). I’m sharing a browser extension to help other users block it). This means that ads are also blocked.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision blocked by UK

The UK’s CMA has finally reached a decision on Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision. And just when it looked like the UK might approve, it finally decided to block the deal, citing concerns about cloud gaming.

They are concerned that Xbox Game Pass already gives Microsoft a very strong position. When Google Stadia was still going, Microsoft owned 60-70% of the cloud gaming market. Microsoft plans to appeal this decision.
