Over the past few years, undersea cables from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean have been cut due to apparent sabotage. A NATO-backed project has shown how satellites can be used to quickly re-establish the most important communications.
The first demonstration of the $2.5 million HEIST project (short for Hybrid Space Submarine Architecture to Ensure Telecommunications Information Security) took place on January 16 in Sweden. The test simulated how the software can quickly match outgoing data communications with available satellite internet providers such as SpaceX’s Starlink and Viasat.
