Dyson has upgraded its most famous hair tool.
On August 26, the brand released the Dyson Airwrap id, a multi-styler with a new lineup of attachments and app compatibility designed to make curling your hair easier than ever. Available in a variety of models for everything from straight to wavy and curly to coily hair, both retail for $599.99, the same price as previous Airwrap models.
This follows the launch of Dyson’s first styling product, the Chitosan range, which also aims to make curls and Airwrap styles last longer.
As a beauty tech reporter at Mashable, I haven’t tried this latest Airwrap (yet), but I have tried the Airwrap Complete and a number of similar products, so while I can’t speak to my first-hand experience with the Airwrap until I write a full review, I can tell you what’s new and what makes it stand out in the rapidly growing multi-styler market.
New Airwrap id attachment
Before we get into anything special, let’s look at the core product – the Styler – and the accessories it comes with. Like previous Airwraps, this product comes with six accessories and a case. The Airwrap for straight to wavy hair comes with the following accessories (new accessories are in bold):
-
Conical Air Wrap Barrel
-
Large round volumizing brush
-
Coanda Smoothing Dryer
-
1.6 inch Airwrap Long Barrel
-
Soft Smoothing Brush
-
High Speed Dryer
It comes in a box with the Airwrap ID, which works for straight to wavy hair.

While there are only two new attachments, Dyson has also made some smart swaps from the old Airwrap Complete lineup, including the Coanda Smoothing Dryer, 1.2-inch Airwrap Long Barrel, 1.6-inch Airwrap Long Barrel, Firm Smoothing Brush, Soft Smoothing Brush, and Round Volumizing Brush.
We tried out four popular Dyson Supersonic knockoffs
Instead of a smaller 1.2-inch barrel, Dyson opted for a tapered option with a 20mm tip, which allows for tighter (and ideally longer-lasting) curls. The stiff smoothing brush, which overlapped with the soft smoothing brush, has been discontinued. The Airwrap Complete has also opted to include a 2.2-inch diameter round brush rather than a 1.5-inch round brush, the former of which was only included with the curly and coily Airwraps. Finally, Dyson has brought back the high-speed dryer, although a Dyson spokesperson confirmed that this is just a new name for the “pre-styling” dryer that was featured on the first-generation Airwrap.

This version also has two new attachments, but it’s very similar to the Airwrap Complete Diffuse with a diffuser, wide-tooth comb, large round volumizing brush, and firm smoothing brush. Like the Straight/Wave Airwrap, Dyson has replaced the 1.2-inch barrel with a conical Airwrap barrel, swapped out the older diffuser model for this new one, and replaced the Coanda smoothing dryer with a high-speed dryer.
We won’t know for sure how it works until we test it out, but the new Wave+Curl diffuser is designed to diffuse airflow in two different ways: Dome and Diffuse. Dyson says that Dome mode accentuates your natural wave or curl, while Diffuse mode adds volume. To me, it seems to offer the same adjustability as the Shark FlexStyle diffuser.
Finally, Dyson has also released a blade concentrator attachment, which doesn’t currently come with either Airwrap id but can be purchased separately for $39.99 along with the 18 other Airwrap attachments on offer (including those listed above). This attachment is designed for those looking for the most precise, smoothest drying possible.
The blade concentrator has two curved surfaces that direct Dyson’s famous Coanda airflow.

Hair styling app
Another big change with the Airwrap id is app compatibility: The Bluetooth-enabled Airwrap connects to the MyDyson app, which includes the id curl program, where users input their hair profile and the app generates a styling routine, including wrapping, styling and cold shot times.
Once you’ve programmed your routine, a single press of the power button launches and controls the Airwrap. It’s not less hassle than pressing the buttons yourself, but… Curling my hair with the Airwrap took some getting used to, but I think it’s a useful feature, and I’ll see how it works once I get my hands on the Airwrap id.
Also, as you can guess from the name “id curl”, the app currently only contains style recommendations for the Airwrap id curl function.
