if Ring of Power‘s first season was about setting the stage for a darkness to come, while its second season is about confronting that darkness that’s already here. When the Amazon show returns, few people are having a good time in Middle-earth, especially elven genius Celebrimbor, played by Charles Edwards. But what’s it like playing a character whose fate is already known to most viewers?
Celebrimbor, ruler of the Elven kingdom of Eregion and a renowned blacksmith, The Lord of the Rings Fans love him for pretty much only one reason: he’s the one who accidentally helped Sauron forge the Rings of Power, setting in motion the Dark Lord’s plan to control all life in Middle-earth, sparking millennia of conflict in the process. The Silmarillion And Tolkien’s other works, this is even more bad For Celebrimbor when the war between the Elves and Sauron broke out. Ring of Power Celebrimbor has always been a time bomb, but that time bomb is ticking louder and louder as season two draws ever closer. Edwards accepts that he, and many viewers, knew all along what was going to happen.
“Obviously, we know that’s going to happen, and that’s part of the appeal of playing a character like this,” Edwards told io9 during a recent press event about Celebrimbor’s fate. Ring of Power“It’s a special moment, but of course, you don’t take that moment into account because the character doesn’t know it’s happening. It’s a very fascinating position to be in, because the actor knows where it’s going, but the character doesn’t. So you know all the way where he’s going, so you get to enjoy that, and you get to enjoy his innocence, his vulnerability, his confusion.”
For Edwards, this meant emphasizing Celebrimbor’s innocence in the upcoming season, even though audiences know from the start that Anathar, the mysterious figure who arrives to help Celebrimbor, is Sauron in disguise. “I was just trying, Charlie,” he said. [Vickers, who plays Sauron and his disguised forms of Halbrand and Annatar] As I said, always play the truth. Sauron messes with his head and leads him down all kinds of dark alleys. But of course, he doesn’t know where his head is. He hopes this will be a fruitful collaboration.”
Whether Celebrimbor’s disastrous pact proves to be fruitful or not remains to be seen. Ring of Power It will return to Amazon Prime Video on August 29th.
