Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest stars are alluding to one of the franchise’s biggest questions. Deadpool and WolverineWade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is brought to the TVA and sees himself on a monitor, bloodied and battered, in the arms of a crying Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Wade begs to know more about it, but Mr. Paradox tells him it’s in the distant future and tells him to forget about it. The question is repeated several times.
We don’t know why Thor was crying until the end of the movie, but two people know: Reynolds and Hemsworth. Reynolds posted on social media earlier this week, “I know why Thor was crying. I can’t live without knowing.” This was reposted the next day by Hemsworth, who commented, “I can keep a secret, too.” You can see both posts here.

There are a number of theories. First, whatever the answer, Marvel isn’t worried about it being leaked. It could be a major spoiler, but the studio has been very open to revealing it in ways they haven’t shown with other productions. In April, Disney released a roughly 10-minute teaser for Deadpool and Wolverine The spoilers released at CinemaCon included a scene of Thor crying, and they were also included in the 40 minutes of footage the studio shared with press shortly before the film’s release. This is significant because that second block of footage notably cut Henry Cavill’s cameo. So Disney and Marvel had discussions about which spoilers to reveal and which to hide, and apparently Thor crying was the okay choice.
Why is that? Well, I think there are a few reasons. One is that anything is possible in the multiverse. So we may never know why Thor was crying. It could be a random occurrence in an alternate timeline that we haven’t seen. Or it could be from a movie that hasn’t been written yet, or is being written. Avengers: Secret Warsboth characters are likely to appear. Wade and Thor certainly share a certain amount of humor, so I can see them becoming friends. And that’s Secret WarsSince it’s still early in the process, Marvel probably doesn’t know what that reason is specifically.
But we’re really happy to see these stars teasing us. Deadpool and WolverineThis is the biggest preview of what’s to come for the foul-mouthed mercenary, and it’s good to know that there’s some kind of rough plan in place.
Deadpool and Wolverine It’s currently in theaters. Avengers: Secret Wars Scheduled to be released in May 2027.
