Futurama It returns to its new home on Hulu on Monday, July 29, with a 10-episode season sure to please fans old and new. With two more seasons planned, there’s hope for more to come. The cast and crew celebrated the show, which has been canceled and revived multiple times, at San Diego Comic-Con.
Executive producers David X. Cohen and Claudia Katz said: Love On the big screen Futurama One day, io9, the company that produced the feature film, spoke about the show at its SDCC press conference ahead of the premiere of season 12. io9 took the opportunity to ask the question we’ve always wondered: What’s the story behind the show? Futurama has been running for a combined 25 years on and off the air – is there anyone on the veteran staff who has been appointed as a lore keeper to make sure all the continuity is maintained?
“It depends on which side you look at,” Cohen said, “because [animation studio] The Rough Drafts contain all the art from the past, and with each update, which happens every decade, everything has to be redrawn in high resolution because TV screens get wider. [laughs].”
Katz chimed in. “I think we’ve re-animated the title sequence in 3D three times. The last one was in 4K and we had to redo the whole thing. What’s funny is, I was showing it to David, and because it was 4K I could see things I’d never noticed before. I was like, ‘What’s that? Did you put that in?’ ‘No, it was there all along.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, wow,'” she said.
Cohen continued, “One of the reasons the show has been able to be revived so many times is that there’s been a lot of continuity behind the scenes. For example, many of the same animators and producers at Rough Draft Studios, all of our voice acting cast have been with the show throughout, which I think is statistically very significant and a bit lucky. And even the writers, at least half of our writing staff are still writers. [who] I’ve been there off and on for over 20 years. [we also] We also have new people who are coming to the show as fans.”
Katz added: “It’s the same in the arts, like there are certain loyal fans and certain up-and-coming fans. [talent].”
Cohen revealed some secrets about how the show’s writers keep it all a secret. Futurama Keeping the story as it is: “This is an embarrassing confession, but in the writers room, we frequently refer to fan sites to find out what happened in old episodes, even those of us who wrote the episodes. Futurama For example, I came second in the quiz night. It’s hard to compete with your fans in terms of knowledge.”
And of course, “we forget sometimes. For example, if there’s an animation error, we don’t want to blame the animators for everybody forgetting,” he said. “The writers didn’t say anything about it. But Leela’s dad, his mouth used to open left and right, and now it’s just like that.” [up and down]But then [the first way]”…Actually, his jaw is very flexible! So in a way, things leak through the gaps in time.”
Futurama Season 12 will premiere on Hulu on July 29th.
