We live in a time when the old is suddenly resurrected. If you want to know how wide the net is, Darksiders Will the franchise return to video games?
On Friday afternoon, THQ Nordic released trailers for the upcoming game. In one, a trio of motionless stone creatures called the Charred Council appear, their eyes glowing with fire and uttering the word “Horseman.” The screen goes black, followed by the tagline, “Get ready to ride again.” Is this a remake or an entirely new game? It’s unclear. Remnant 2 Developed by Gunfire Games (formerly Darksiders III) will be leading the project, but there is currently no set release window or planned consoles.
If you haven’t played yet Darksiders, This is one of the stranger game franchises of the 2010s. Story-wise, the original 2010 game focused on War, the youngest of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who accidentally triggered the apocalypse prematurely and was sent to a devastated Earth to redeem himself. War eventually finds out that the Council has made him a scapegoat, and the game ends with him calling on his brothers to take up arms and fight the boss and the separate forces of Heaven and Hell.
You’d think the next game would focus on the Horsemen destroying things together, right? But subsequent games never delivered on that four-player promise of an ending. Darksiders II and III. They are parallel sequels starring fellow Horsemen Death and Fury respectively, with Strife co-starring alongside War in the 2020 prequel. Darksiders: GenesisMore than that, the series was notable for being extremely cartoonish. Battle Chasers Artist Joe Madureira was the co-director and co-writer of the first two games, as well as the character designer. Each title was in a different genre, with the first two games being God of War and Zelda, Inspired by Metroidvania and Soul-like games Darksiders 3, and Book of Genesis Driven from the top down, Diablo.
Several older game series have been relaunched after long periods of silence, but none of them have consistently delivered on their promises. DarksidersIf Gunfire and THQ want to bring the game back, then by all means, move the series forward and don’t keep tricking players again.
