Sonos is considering returning to the old app

What is the Sonos S2 app?

Before the disastrous redesign, there were two versions of the Sonos app. S1 and Season 2S1 is the original version of the app and works with the oldest Sonos hardware, e.g. Sonos Zone Player Not just a model, Plays: 5 (1st Generation) and Sonos BridgeThese devices can only be controlled using the S1 app.

The S1 app will continue to be available for download and will continue to work as expected with your S1-compatible devices, and many of the more recent Sonos products that were designed to work with the S2 app can still be downgraded to be controlled with the S1 app. Sonos One, Sonos Beam (1st generation), Sonos Moveand the first generation SYMFONISK Speakers All IKEA products can be controlled using the S1 app, so if your setup only includes devices compatible with the S1 app, this is probably the best option for now.

Then in May of this year, Sonos released a major update to its app, introducing an entirely new design. Some users were also unable to add new speakers to their system using the new app, forcing Sonos CEO Patrick Spence to issue a statement apologizing.

There’s currently no way to roll back to the previous Sonos S2 app, so Sonos users will just have to wait for regular updates that will slowly iron out the long list of issues.

Will the Sonos S2 app definitely return?

Unfortunately, simply rolling back the app to an older version until the issue is fixed in the new version is not enough. This is problematic for two main reasons:

Second, because a big part of the redesign was a move to a more cloud-based system, restoring access to previous versions of S2 may not be as simple as re-releasing the old app to the app store.

Whether or not the old app will temporarily return, Sonos has made it clear that it plans to eventually push forward with the updated version of the app. During a recent earnings call, Patrick Spence said he believes the app redesign “was and will continue to be the right choice.”
